Hawksbill Sea Turtle

This turtle is commonly known as "pawikan" in the Philippines.Its scientific name is Eretmochelys imbricata. It is called hawksbill turtle because it possesses distinct features with a mouth which has a resemblance to that of the bill of a bird. It also has a general bird-like appearance supported by its extended head and sharp facial look. It is seen all the way though the Philippine archipelago but mostly found in the bodies of water nearby Bicol region and the islands of Palawan, Samar and Mindoro. It doesn't usually go in the deep portions of water for it prefers to stay at coastlines where in there is an easy access to a huge number of sponges and to sandy nesting sites.The hawksbill tutle, a wonderful specie in the sea belongs to the group of creatures considered as at risk of extinction.It is included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Appendix I. Therefore, illegal trading of this kind of turtle is highly discouraged because it is nationally and internationally preserved and guarded by laws.

Calamian Deer


The calamian deer with a scientic name of Axis calamianensis is locally found Calamian Group of Islands which are situated in the northern tip of Palawan, Philippines.It is commonly termed as "usa" and it belongs to the kingdom Animalia.It is an inhabitant of grassland and woodland that's why it is a herbivore that eats fallen flowers or fruits and plants with little or no woody tissue. On the other hand, the population of calamian deer is already declining it is due to the malpractices of people including hunting, kaingin and slash & burn system of deforestation. Unfotunately, this living creature is a common subject for hunting among hunters because many products are made out of antles which are in demand in the market and can sustain their daily basic necessities in life. At this point, the estimated number of calamian deer is almost 900 as listed in International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Bleeding Heart Dove


This bleeding-heart dove or pigeon(Gallicolumba luzonica)as its name suggests, literally has a red spot on its breast that makes it a unique creature. It is found in the five major faunal regions in the Philippines namely Luzon, Mindoro, Negros, Sulu and Mindanao.However, just like other species the population of bleeding-heart dove is decreasing because of the most common reason which is the inevitable human intervention that illegally damages the natural sanctuary of birds. The origin of its scientific name as it comes from the word Galli meaning "chicken" explains its similarity to the way a chicken finds its food on the ground for survival. On the other hand, it is good to know that there are foundations in the Philippines and all over the world particularly Australian Avicultural Federation (Australia),Bristol, Clifton and West of England Zoological Society (UK), Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (Germany)and many more that financially support Bleeding-Heart Pigeon Conservation Programme that aims to protect and save its already endangered number.

Philippine Crocodile

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources included the Philippine crocodile in the red list because it is severely jeopardized due to the misconduct of humans like dynamite fishing that extremely destroys its natural way of living. It is exclusively found in the Philippine islands and stays in rivers, creeks, ponds and marshes. Its teeth are very useful in catching invertebrates and reptiles that are small in size.It is a type of crocodile that is shy and doesn't harm people as long as its anger is not aroused. Despite the fact that its distribution is just limited it is still interesting to know that a concerned group named "The Crocodile Conservation Society Philippines" intends to focus mainly in the objectives that are centered on the welfare of the crocodiles is working toward breeding and regular monitoring of the current status of the Philippine crocodile.

VISAYAN WARTY PIG


The Visayan Warty Pig(Sus Cebifrons) or typically known as "baboy ramo" is found in Central Visayas in Panay, Negros, Cebu and Aklan. It is an omnivorous that eats either other animals or agricultural crops. The famale boar has dark stiff animal hairs while the male has light brown or silvery ones. Hence, it is covered with hairs that have prickly texture making it appears like a spiky mohawk. The basis behind its name warty pig is that it has small facial warts exclusively grow in a male boar. This pig rolls around in a mud but hobbies of the one inhabiting in the wild are somehow unidentified. It is a well-known target of most hunters that's why its number is going down which is near to extinction. The IUCN listed it with a corresponding remark of critically endangered specie.The call for the conservation and preservation of this unique creature has reached many agencies that's why various programs are now putting plans into action to rescue the life of the visayan warty pig which is very much affected by the malpractices of human beings.

Philippine Eagle


The Philippine eagle is widely acknowledged as the national bird of the Philippines.It has a former name of Monkey-eating eagle and the etymology of its previous name is based on the fact that it eats monkeys specifically macaques but later studies show that it hunts variety of animals. Its taloned feet and sharp, hooked beaks are very beneficial on the part of the eagle for it makes food-hunting more convenient and easier. There's no wonder why it belongs to a group of birds called raptor that catches prey. It embodies long brown feathers, broad wings and bluish gray beak that enables it to grasp the target firmly. It is viewed as largest eagle all over the world having its length as a preference. It dwells in Mount Apo that is located in Mindanao.The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)confirms the rapid decrease pf the population of Philippine eagle that's why it is seeking help from the government and the society in preserving this one of a kind creature before it goes beyond its critically-endangered status.

Philippine naked-backed fruit bat


The Philippine Naked-backed Fruit Bat particularly originated in Cebu and Negros Islands.Its scientific name is Dobsonia chapman. One interesting fact about this type of bat is that its wings are directly connected to the midline of its back that's why a naked effect emerges. It is a cave-dweller especially the one that's formed by limestone and also lives even in that are highly disturbed regions.It usually goes out at night to eat fruit in rainforests that's why the cutting down of trees produces a great impact to the decrease in the population of this creature. There was a declaration from IUCN that the Philippine Naked-backed Fruit Bat already vanished but then it's good to know that there was a rediscovery by the year 2000. Moreover, it is still classified as critically endangered because of the downturn in its population for about 80 % because of various threats including climate change, deforestation and other destructive activities of man.
