Bleeding Heart Dove
This bleeding-heart dove or pigeon(Gallicolumba luzonica)as its name suggests, literally has a red spot on its breast that makes it a unique creature. It is found in the five major faunal regions in the Philippines namely Luzon, Mindoro, Negros, Sulu and Mindanao. However, just like other species the population of bleeding-heart dove is decreasing because of the most common reason which is the inevitable human intervention that illegally damages the natural sanctuary of birds. The origin of its scientific name as it comes from the word Galli meaning "chicken" explains its similarity to the way a chicken finds its food on the ground for survival. On the other hand, it is good to know that there are foundations in the Philippines and all over the world particularly Australian Avicultural Federation (Australia),Bristol, Clifton and West of England Zoological Society (UK), Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (Germany)and many more that financially support Bleeding-Heart Pigeon Conservation Programme that aims to protect and save its already endangered number.
