Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo (TAMARAW)

The Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo Bubalus mindorensis is called in the following names: Timaraw, Tamarao, Tamarau, Mindorobüffel, Búfalo de Mindoro but is commonly known as "tamaraw". This native terrestrial mammal as indicated on its name is found in the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. It is considered as one of the rarest mammals inhabited in the Philippines. It has a vigorous body, hair that varies from dark brown to greyish black and legs that are short and stocky. It also has a pair of horns that is somehow straight and pointing backward. It is usually active at night which is the influence of the disruption caused by humans to its natural habitat. However, the one in captivity is active in the early morning and late afternoon. Rolling or relaxing in a mud is a significant activity for a tamaraw for it can find comfort or relief through it. It is an herbivorous for it feeds on grasses, bamboo shoots and the like.Hunting, habitat loss and various diseases are just among those reasons of the decrease on its population but it's good to know that there is a captive breeding program established to focus more on the welfare of Mindoro Dwarf Buffalo.
